Accessibility statement for UK Data Service GitHub Pages

This accessibility statement applies to web pages authored by the UK Data Service that are hosted on GitHub Pages (in addition to its main website). GitHub Pages is a static site hosting service that publishes websites using files from a GitHub repository, referenced in About GitHub Pages. UK Data Service content hosted on GitHub Pages covered by this statement include, but are not limited to:

The UK Data Service makes the source of some of its learning and training materials available on its main GitHub repository. Some of these link to relevant GitHub web pages.

This website is run by the UK Data Service. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • High levels of zoom may cause text to spill off the screen.
  • Not every feature can be used when text size is increased by 200%.
  • Some icon buttons and images may not have suitable alternative text.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • The alternative text in the logo needs updating to provide further information. This means that people using a screen reader will not be able to understand what the image is. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content (Level A) Icon index. We will instruct our developers to fix this issue.
  • Some tables contain empty headers. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships). We plan to correct these tables within the next six months.
  • Some icon-only buttons may not have proper text alternatives, which can impact screen reader users’ ability to understand their function. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content (Level A) Icon index. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We will instruct our developers to fix these issues.
